Monumental bike tour

Exploring Madrid’s historic centre by bike is one of the best ways to discover some of the Spanish capital’s most iconic monuments, squares and historic buildings in a relatively short time.

The city centre is home to must-see landmarks such as the Royal Palace, Almudena Cathedral, Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol and Plaza de Oriente, as well as historic streets and hidden corners that tell the story of Madrid.

Cycling makes it easy to move between these different areas while still having time to stop, take photographs and enjoy the atmosphere of each place. It also allows you to cover much more ground than you would on a walking tour.

In this guide, we take you through a bike route around Madrid Monumental, highlighting some of the essential places to see, how long you need and a few practical tips for enjoying the historic centre on two wheels.

If you would like to compare different options, take a look at our guide to the 3 best bike routes in Madrid, where we compare Madrid Monumental, Retiro Park and the route that combines both areas.

Is Madrid’s historic centre worth exploring by bike?

Absolutely, especially if you want to see many of Madrid’s essential landmarks without spending most of the day walking from one monument to another.

Madrid Monumental brings together an impressive variety of historic places within a relatively compact area. By bike, you can move from grand squares and monuments to the narrow streets of old Madrid, combining the city’s most famous attractions with smaller corners that many visitors might otherwise miss.

Unlike Retiro Park, Madrid’s historic centre has some hills, busy streets and areas with many pedestrians. Choosing the right itinerary, cycling at a relaxed pace and respecting local traffic regulations are therefore particularly important.

And that is part of what makes this route so interesting: it combines cycling, history and Madrid’s vibrant street life in one experience.

Our Madrid Monumental bike route

Our Madrid Monumental bike route is designed to discover some of the capital’s most important historic landmarks and monuments in approximately two hours, combining grand squares, historic streets and some of the most characterful corners of central Madrid.

The route begins near Ópera, right in the heart of the city. From there, we head into historic Madrid towards Plaza de la Villa, one of the best-preserved monumental areas of old Madrid and an excellent place to begin discovering the origins of the city.

We continue towards Puerta del Sol, one of Madrid’s most famous meeting points, before reaching the magnificent Plaza Mayor, one of the capital’s most iconic squares and the setting for centuries of Madrid history.

Nearby, we find another place steeped in history: Botín Restaurant, founded in the 18th century and internationally known for its long history and culinary tradition.

The route then continues towards one of Madrid’s most impressive monumental areas, where we discover Almudena Cathedral and the Royal Palace, one of the great symbols of the Spanish capital.

From there, we cycle through the elegant Plaza de Oriente, located between the Royal Palace and the Teatro Real, where you can also see the famous equestrian statue of King Philip IV.

We then continue by bike towards the Temple of Debod, an authentic ancient Egyptian temple located at one of Madrid’s most beautiful viewpoints. Its gardens offer excellent views over the western side of the city and make it one of Madrid’s most popular places to enjoy the sunset.

During the ride, we will also discover other places connected with Madrid’s history before returning towards Ópera and the Teatro Real.

In just two hours, this route allows you to experience different periods of Madrid’s history and discover some of the essential sights of the city centre in a comfortable, entertaining and completely different way.

How long is the Madrid Monumental bike route?

The Madrid Monumental bike route takes approximately 2 hours, giving you enough time to explore a large part of the historic centre while making stops at its main landmarks.

Cycling allows you to cover considerably more ground than walking without turning the experience into a race. There is still time to stop, admire the monuments, take photographs and discover some of the stories and curiosities behind the places you visit.

This makes the route particularly suitable for first-time visitors to Madrid or travellers with only a few days in the city who want to see several of its most important sights in one activity.

Regular bike or electric bike?

The route can be comfortably completed on a regular city bike, although it is worth remembering that central Madrid has some hills.

For anyone who would prefer to cycle with less effort, an electric bike is an excellent alternative, particularly on uphill sections.

Both options allow you to enjoy the experience at a comfortable pace while concentrating on Madrid, its monuments and its history.

Explore Madrid Monumental independently or with a local guide?

Exploring central Madrid by bike independently gives you complete freedom to choose your stops and spend as much time as you like at each location.

However, joining a guided bike tour with a local guide allows you to discover much more than the monuments shown on a map. Plaza Mayor, the Royal Palace, Almudena Cathedral, Plaza de Oriente and the Temple of Debod are filled with stories, curiosities and details that help bring Madrid’s history to life.

Following a planned route also makes it easier to move between the different parts of the historic centre without constantly checking your phone or looking for the next stop.

If this is your first visit to Madrid, a guided Madrid Monumental bike tour is an excellent way to get your bearings and discover some of the city’s most important landmarks in approximately two hours.
