Retiro Park is one of the best places in Madrid to explore by bike. Located right in the heart of the city, its tree-lined avenues, beautiful gardens, monuments and historic corners offer the perfect combination of nature, culture and sightseeing.
Cycling through Retiro Park allows you to discover many of its most famous landmarks in a relatively short time, including the Great Pond and Monument to Alfonso XII, Crystal Palace, Rose Garden, Cecilio Rodríguez Gardens and Fisherman’s House.
But Retiro is much more than its best-known monuments. Along the way, you will find gardens, fountains, sculptures, historic trees and quieter corners that are well worth discovering at a relaxed pace.
Can you cycle in Retiro Park?
Yes, you can cycle in designated areas of Retiro Park, making a bike a great way to explore this large green space without having to cover long distances on foot.
However, Retiro is one of Madrid’s most popular parks, so cyclists should always respect current regulations and signs and, above all, give priority and consideration to pedestrians. In busy areas, narrow entrances or places where cycling is restricted, you should slow down or follow the relevant signs.
One of the main advantages of exploring Retiro on two wheels is that you can move easily between its main attractions while still having plenty of time to stop and enjoy the places that interest you most.
Much of the park is also relatively flat, so you do not need to be an experienced cyclist or particularly fit to enjoy a relaxed ride.
The idea is not to cycle through Retiro as quickly as possible, but to take your time, stop at its monuments and enjoy the atmosphere of Madrid’s most famous green space.
Our bike route through Retiro Park
Our itinerary is designed to discover both the most famous landmarks and some of the lesser-known corners of Retiro Park.
We begin near the historic Casa de Fieras, which was home to Madrid’s zoo for many years, before continuing towards the elegant Cecilio Rodríguez Gardens. This peaceful corner of Retiro is known for its beautiful gardens, fountains and, especially, the peacocks that roam freely through the grounds.
We then cycle towards one of the great symbols of the park: the Crystal Palace (Palacio de Cristal). Its spectacular iron-and-glass structure, surrounded by trees and overlooking a small lake, makes it one of the most photographed places in Retiro.
Our next stop is La Rosaleda, the Rose Garden, created in the early 20th century and filled with thousands of roses that bring this part of the park to life during flowering season.
From there, we continue towards the famous Fallen Angel Fountain, one of Madrid’s most unusual sculptures, inspired by the fall of Lucifer. Afterwards, we visit the Forest of Remembrance, a moving memorial dedicated to the victims of the March 11, 2004 attacks in Madrid.
Our bike route continues to the Parterre, an elegant French-style garden and one of the most photogenic corners of Retiro Park.
Next, we head towards the Great Pond, one of the park’s most recognisable sights. Overlooking the water stands the impressive Monument to Alfonso XII, with its monumental colonnade and equestrian statue.
Before finishing the route, there are still two special places to discover: the charming Fisherman’s House (Casita del Pescador), a small 19th-century building, and the restored Montaña de los Gatos, one of Retiro Park’s most curious historic spaces.
It is a route that combines nature, history, monuments and some of Retiro Park’s most surprising hidden corners, allowing you to experience much more of the park than most visitors see on their first visit.
How long do you need to explore Retiro Park by bike?
A 2-hour bike ride through Retiro Park is an ideal amount of time to discover many of its most famous attractions as well as several lesser-known places without feeling rushed.
Two hours gives you enough time to cycle comfortably between the different points of interest, stop to learn about their history, take photographs and enjoy the surroundings.
During the route, you can visit the Cecilio Rodríguez Gardens, Crystal Palace, Rose Garden, Fallen Angel, Forest of Remembrance, Parterre, Great Pond and Monument to Alfonso XII, as well as places such as the Fisherman’s House and Montaña de los Gatos.
With a local guide, you can also discover stories, curiosities and details about Retiro Park that can easily go unnoticed when exploring independently.
Is this bike route suitable for children? Regular bike or e-bike?
Exploring Retiro Park by bike is a great activity for families. Since most of the route takes place inside the park, you can enjoy the experience at a relaxed pace, making regular stops and adapting the ride to the group.
For most visitors, a regular city bike is more than enough for this 2-hour route. You do not need a high level of fitness, and the different stops provide plenty of opportunities to rest while discovering Retiro’s monuments and gardens.
An electric bike is also a good option for anyone who would prefer to cycle with less effort or simply enjoy an even more comfortable experience.
For families, the most important thing is to choose a bicycle suitable for each rider’s age and height and keep the pace comfortable for younger cyclists.
Explore Retiro Park independently or with a local guide?
Exploring Retiro Park by bike on your own is a great option if you already know the park, want complete freedom over your itinerary or simply enjoy discovering new places at your own pace.
However, if this is your first visit, joining a guided bike tour of Retiro Park can help you make much better use of your time and discover the stories and curiosities hidden behind many of its gardens, monuments and historic buildings.
