Madrid Highlights & Retiro Park by Bike: The Complete Route

Centro + Retiro

Want to discover some of Madrid’s most iconic landmarks and explore its most famous park in the same experience? This Madrid Highlights + Retiro Park bike route combines two very different sides of the Spanish capital in one complete ride.

On one side, you will discover historic and monumental Madrid, with its beautiful squares, palaces and some of the city’s most important buildings. On the other, you will cycle into Retiro Park, where the busy streets of central Madrid give way to gardens, monuments, fountains and tree-lined avenues.

A bicycle is one of the best ways to combine these two areas, allowing you to cover much more ground in a relatively short time than you could on foot.

This route is particularly recommended for first-time visitors to Madrid, travellers with limited time or anyone who wants to get a more complete overview of the city.

In this guide, we show you what you can discover on a 3-hour bike route through central Madrid and Retiro Park, how the itinerary works and why this combination is one of the best ways to experience Madrid on two wheels.

If you are still deciding which route is right for you, take a look at our guide to the 3 best bike routes in Madrid, where we compare the different options.

Why combine Madrid’s historic centre and Retiro Park?

One of the best things about this route is the contrast between the two areas.

In historic and monumental Madrid, you will discover impressive architecture, famous squares and landmarks that help tell the story of the Spanish capital.

Retiro Park offers a completely different experience. Gardens, trees, fountains, palaces and monuments make this part of the route perfect for enjoying Madrid at a more relaxed pace.

Combining both areas gives you the opportunity to experience Madrid’s historic urban centre and its most famous green space in a single ride.

And because you are travelling by bicycle, you can move efficiently between the different areas while still having plenty of opportunities to stop, explore and enjoy the city.

Our Madrid Highlights & Retiro Park bike route

Our 3-hour Madrid bike route is designed for visitors who want to see much more of the city in one experience, combining the historic centre, monumental Madrid, the Literary Quarter and Retiro Park.

The route begins in central Madrid near Ópera. From there, we head towards Calle Factor, a fantastic viewpoint offering beautiful views of the Royal Palace and Almudena Cathedral.

We then continue through historic Madrid, passing Plaza de la Villa before reaching the magnificent Plaza Mayor, one of the great symbols of the Spanish capital.

From historic Madrid to the Literary Quarter

Our route continues towards the Barrio de las Letras (Literary Quarter), one of Madrid’s most fascinating historic neighbourhoods and an area closely connected with some of the greatest writers of the Spanish Golden Age.

We cycle past places including historic Casa Alberto and Calle Cervantes, before continuing towards Paseo del Prado, one of Madrid’s great cultural avenues.

Along the way, we pass the area around the Royal Spanish Academy and Prado Museum before entering Retiro Park.

Retiro Park by bike

As we enter Retiro Park, the atmosphere changes completely. We leave the busy streets of central Madrid behind and cycle into one of the capital’s most beautiful green spaces.

During the route, we discover some of Retiro’s most special places, including the unusual Fallen Angel Fountain, Rose Garden, Cecilio Rodríguez Gardens and Crystal Palace.

We also reach the Great Pond, where we can admire the impressive Monument to Alfonso XII, one of Retiro Park’s most recognisable sights.

Puerta de Alcalá, Cibeles and Puerta del Sol

After exploring Retiro Park, we head back towards central Madrid, passing three of the capital’s essential landmarks.

First, we reach the monumental Puerta de Alcalá, one of the great symbols of Madrid. From there, we continue towards Plaza de Cibeles, famous for its fountain and surrounded by some of the city’s most impressive architecture.

Finally, we reach Puerta del Sol, one of Madrid’s most famous meeting points, before returning towards our starting point.

In a single bike ride, you will have travelled from historic Madrid through some of its greatest monuments, the Literary Quarter and Paseo del Prado before discovering the nature and architecture of Retiro Park.

How long is the Madrid Highlights + Retiro Park bike route?

The route takes approximately 3 hours, making it a much more comprehensive experience than exploring Madrid Monumental or Retiro Park separately.

Cycling allows you to cover a considerable distance without making the experience overly demanding. Along the way, there is time to stop at different landmarks, take photographs and discover some of the stories and curiosities behind the places you visit.

For visitors who would like an even more comfortable experience, an electric bike  is also available.

Who is this bike route for?

This route is particularly recommended for first-time visitors who want to see as much of Madrid as possible in just a few hours.

It is also a great option for travellers who have limited time but do not want to choose between exploring the historic centre and visiting Retiro Park.

By combining both areas, you can experience Madrid’s history, monuments, traditional neighbourhoods, grand avenues and green spaces in a single ride.

If you prefer a shorter route focusing on just one area, take a look at our Madrid Monumental bike route or our Retiro Park bike route.

And if you are still deciding which experience is best for you, our guide to the 3 best bike routes in Madrid compares all three options.

Explore Madrid independently or with a local guide?

Many of these places can, of course, be visited independently. However, on a comprehensive route such as Madrid Highlights + Retiro Park, having a local guide makes it much easier to get the most out of your three hours.

You do not need to constantly check a map or work out how to connect the different areas of the city. At the same time, you can discover stories, curiosities and details about the monuments and neighbourhoods you pass along the way.

From historic Madrid and the Literary Quarter to Paseo del Prado and Retiro Park, every part of the route reveals a different side of the city.

For that reason, a 3-hour guided bike tour through central Madrid and Retiro Park is one of the most complete ways to discover Madrid in an active, comfortable and entertaining way.
